Martin Karplus passed away

It is with deep sadness and emotion that we learned of the death of Professor Martin Karplus on December 28. Alongside British-American Michael Levitt and Israeli-American Arieh Warshel, Martin Karplus won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2013 for his work on computer modeling of chemical reactions.

A Harvard professor, Martin Karplus set up a research team in Strasbourg as early as 1993, became an adjunct professor in 1996 and then joined the Institut de Science et d'Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS) as Director of the Biophysical Chemistry Laboratory. There, he trained dozens of researchers who pay tribute to him today, both for the major impact he had on his field of research and on science in general, and for his great humanism. A fine cook and great connoisseur of wines, he was also a remarkable photographer, a talent that can be seen at ISIS, where some fifty photographs taken during his travels are on display.

Our thoughts go out to his family and numerous friends.
