Abstract

The lecture will describe how scientific curiosity driven studies on the mechanisms of metallo-enzymes that catalyse reactions presently impossible for synthesis have helped to enable the discovery of new therapies. The particular focus will be on iron and dioxygen dependent oxygenases involved in antibiotic biosynthesis and hypoxia sensing in humans and other animals. It will describe time-resolved studies on catalysis by these oxygenases, the results of which highlight how little we know about the details of how enzymes work, especially in an in vivo context.
