Chemistry meets Medicine
December 13, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Chemistry, the central discipline, has several relations to human health. New drugs are constantly developed to cure diseases, vaccines are on the market to prevent them and materials have substitute bones, replace valves and create labels and sensors for (early) diagnostics.
The complexity of our body requires efforts from several different fields and even disciplines and in the last years biologists, material scientists, physicists, mathematicians, engineers have devoted coherent efforts to develop new drug delivery systems, biopolymers for tissue regeneration, in vitro organoids, materials for (non invasive) surgery, spectroscopic tools to visualize processes, just to cite some of them.
This mini symposium aims to tackle some of the advances in materials (nanoparticles, polymers, hydrogels) applied to medical needs, their interactions with cell in vitro and in vivo and to define the limits and problems in the translation from labs to animals.
The speakers who will present their latest results in different areas are:
- Prof. Barbara ROTHEN-RUTISHAUSER
Title: Nanoparticle-cell interactions – what we know and where to go from here
- Prof. Joerg LAHANN
Title: Multifunctional polymer particles and fibers by electrohydrodynamic co-jetting
- Prof. Graziella PELLEGRINI
Title: Hurdles in a successful example of stem-cell based regenerative medicine
- Prof. Michael SAILOR
Title: Imaging and Drug Delivery with Porous Silicon Nanoparticles
- Prof. Twan LAMMERS
Title: smart strategies for tumor-targeted drug delivery
- Prof. Silvana PERRETTA
Title: Image guided surgery
