Polyesters derived from renewable resources currently attract much interest as alternatives to fossil-based plastics. Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters offers an ideal entry to the preparation of such polyesters with controlled molecular features (molecular weights, microstructure, end-groups). Those ROP reactions are best mediated by a variety of catalysts among which metal-based catalysts undoubtedly offer the best abilities in terms of activity and stereocontrol. In particular, lanthanide complexes associated with achiral multidentate phenolate ligands have shown unique capacities to achieve the stereocontrolled ROP of racemic cyclic esters, such as lactide and the much more reluctant 4-membered b-lactones. The development of those catalysts, mechanistic issues related to second sphere C-Hp type interactions, and the preparation of highly syndiotactic or unprecedented chemically alternated polyhydroxyalkanoates (scheme) will be discussed.
