Dr. Gunnar Pruessner “Self Organised Criticality: Its past and more recent field theoretical insights”

May 16, 2019 @ 9:30 am

Dr. Gunnar Pruessner

Imperial College London

ABSTRACT
In the first part of this talk, I will try to give a fair assessment
of the state of affairs; More than thirty years after Self Organised
Criticality was introduced as a concept, what is understood and what are the open questions?
The understanding of Self Organised Criticality has advanced very far, not only on the basis of numerics, but also using technically more
demanding methods developed in Statistical Mechanics. A few robust models have been identified and studied in detail, some even solved analytically.

In the second part of this talk, I will present some recent results
based on a field theory of the Manna model, which was constructed from its microscopic lattice rules rather than from symmetry considerations on a coarse grained level. Some exact results can be extracted instantly and the role of the finiteness of the system is immediately understood. What is more, the mechanism of self-organisation can be identified and studied.
